Visiting Kaán Károly Lookout Tower for Panoramic Views and Forest Walks
The Kaán Károly Lookout Tower is a wooden observation tower located in the peaceful woods of Nagy-Hárs-hegy hill, on the Buda side of Budapest. Located at an altitude of 454 metres, it offers one of the easiest panoramic walks near Budapest.
Among the many hikes around the Hungarian capital, this one is so simple that it almost feels more like a walk than a proper hike. Reaching the tower is quick, easy and rewarding, making it a perfect activity for travellers looking for a quieter side of Budapest beyond the busy city centre.
Thanks to its location in the north-western hills of Budapest, the panorama stretches across forests, residential districts, quiet towns in the nearby valleys and layers of hills fading into the horizon. From the tower, you can enjoy a surprisingly wide view over Budapest and the surrounding Buda Hills.

How to Reach Kaán Károly Lookout Tower From Budapest
From Széll Kálmán tér, take bus 22, 22A or 222 towards Budakeszi. During the short ride from Budapest, the scenery gradually changes from residential streets to wooded hills. Keep an eye out on the left and you may even spot some of Budapest’s historic yellow trams running below.
Get off at Szépjuhászné stop, which is also one of the stations of the charming Children’s Railway running through the Buda Hills. From here, different forest paths lead to the tower in around 20 minutes. The trail is wide and relatively easy, although you should still watch out for runners and cyclists along the way.
The Forest Walk Through the Buda Hills
We set out on a late Sunday afternoon with our friends Adam, a local tour guide, and Lars, who seemed more interested in the final reward of pancakes than the hike itself. One of the most surprising aspects of this walk is how quickly the city disappears behind the trees. Within a very short time, the feeling changes completely and Budapest suddenly feels very far away.
The trail through the Buda Hills is wide, peaceful and easy to follow, making it suitable even for travellers without hiking experience. Apart from a few gentle uphill sections, the walk feels more relaxing than challenging. During our visit, we passed runners, cyclists and families enjoying the fresh air among the trees.
Depending on the season, the scenery changes dramatically. Autumn brings colourful foliage, while winter often covers the forest in snow and creates an entirely different atmosphere. Even on cloudy days, the woodland surrounding the tower feels calm and surprisingly quiet compared to the busy streets of central Budapest.
Panoramic Views From Kaán Károly Lookout Tower
The tower itself, a wooden structure resting on stone foundations, looks like it belongs to another era even though it was built between 1988 and 1989. The stairs may appear steep and narrow at first, but the structure feels solid and safe once you start climbing.
The views become increasingly impressive with every level until, from the top platform, the view suddenly opens over Budapest, Castle Hill, the Parliament building and the rolling forests of the Buda Hills.
During our visit, the atmosphere felt particularly peaceful, as the tower was almost empty except for another couple. The wooden structure occasionally squeaked in the wind, adding even more character to the experience. We spent quite a while taking pictures, filming the moving clouds and watching the rain slowly approach Budapest.
One of the most surprising aspects of the panorama was how many details gradually appeared once we stopped and looked more carefully. Hidden among the trees were church domes, blooming branches and endless shades of green stretching across the hills. I honestly did not expect to see the Hungarian Parliament so clearly from this distance.
On a nearby hill, you can also spot Elizabeth Lookout Tower, another popular panoramic point in the Buda Hills and a great destination for a longer day outdoors. Both locations can also be combined with a ride on the historic Children’s Railway.
We originally planned to stay for sunset, but temperatures dropped surprisingly quickly once the clouds covered the sky. By the time we decided to head back down, we were already shivering in our light clothes and managed to catch the bus just before the rain started pouring over the hills.

What to Know Before Visiting Kaán Károly Tower
Even though this is one of the easiest hikes in Budapest, a few practical details can make the experience much more enjoyable. Comfortable shoes are recommended because parts of the forest path can be stony or muddy, especially after rain or during autumn. Bringing an extra layer of clothing compared to the city centre is also a good idea, particularly if you plan to stay until sunset. We definitely underestimated how cold and windy the hill could become in the evening.
If you are using public transport, make sure you have valid tickets or a Budapest travel pass before leaving Széll Kálmán tér. A charged phone can also be useful if you return after dark or want to follow the different paths through the woods more easily. Searching for “Kaán Károly kilátó” on Google Maps usually works perfectly.
One of the reasons we enjoyed this walk so much is that it takes surprisingly little time compared to the feeling of escaping the city completely. From Széll Kálmán tér, the bus ride takes around 15 minutes, followed by approximately 20 minutes of easy walking through the forest. Including time for pictures, relaxing and enjoying the panorama, most visitors will spend between two and four hours here.
Visiting the lookout tower itself is completely free, as there is no entrance ticket and the tower remains open all year round. Public transport fares in Budapest occasionally change, so it is best to check the latest ticket prices on the official BKK website before your visit.
Why Kaán Károly Tower Is Worth Visiting
Kaán Károly Tower combines fresh air, peaceful woodland and panoramic views while requiring very little effort compared to many other hikes around Budapest. The short walking distance and easy public transport connections make it one of the most accessible outdoor escapes near Budapest.
We would definitely return, especially with slightly warmer clothes and better timing for sunset. Near the tower, there is also a clearing with benches and a stone fire pit often used for barbecues during warmer months. The atmosphere becomes particularly relaxing on summer evenings surrounded by the forest.
Travellers looking for a longer outdoor experience can also combine the lookout tower with other walking routes through the Buda Hills or continue towards nearby panoramic points such as Elizabeth Lookout Tower.
