Museums

Msheireb Museums is a group of four historical houses: Mohammed Bin Jassim House, Company House, Radwani House, and Bin Jelmood House. Each house showcases different aspects of Qatari life, such as pearl diving, oil exploration, slavery, and traditional architecture to provide a genuine insight into the rich cultural heritage of the country.

Company House is a museum located in a house once used as the headquarters for Qatar’s first oil company. The museum narrates the story of the Qatari petroleum industry workers and their families who helped transform Qatar into a modern society. Visitors can interact with the tools and appliances introduced by the company.

Mohammed Bin Jassim House is a museum that showcases Doha’s history and unique architectural heritage. Built by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Jassim Al-Thani, son of the founder of modern Qatar, the house demonstrates Msheireb’s traditional values. It introduces the transformation of Msheireb over time by recalling memories of its past, showcasing its present, and engaging visitors in the plans for the future. The museum also houses the Echo Memory Art Project using objects unearthed during the excavation work on the site.

Radwani House is a restored house built in the 1920s between Al-Jasrah and Msheireb, two of Doha’s oldest quarters. The house presents traditional Qatari family life. It provides visitors with an insight into how family life has evolved in Qatar over the years.

Bin Jelmood House aims to raise awareness and play a pivotal role in the global abolition of human exploitation. The museum pays tribute and acknowledges formerly enslaved people’s social, cultural, and economic contributions to the development of human civilizations. In particular, the house explores the role Islam played in guiding the humane treatment of enslaved people, their integration into society, and the eventual abolition of slavery. Bin Jelmood House also tells when there was a flourishing trade in enslaved people throughout the Indian Ocean World.

The Corniche

During the 1970s, the Sheraton Grand Doha was the only remarkable building standing on the Corniche waterfront. You can recognise it by its curious pyramid shape. However, nowadays, the area is home to several luxurious hotels and skyscrapers that offer an exceptional dining experience in Doha.

The National Museum of Qatar, the Museum of Islamic Art, and MIA Park overlook the Arabian Gulf at the southern end of the Corniche. Adjacent to it, Souq Waqif is the city’s historic centre, a renovated market filled with pearls, spices, fabrics, food stalls, cafes, and shisha lounges. You can sit, refresh yourself with a glass of fruit juice or local karak tea, and enjoy the lively atmosphere as the souq comes alive at night.

However, the Corniche also offers some of the most beautiful parks in Doha, such as the MIA Park, a must-visit if you are travelling with children. Local and expats love this promenade because it offers cultural attractions, parks, restaurants, and clubs for everyone.
