In 1526, Laux hosted a gathering of itinerant Waldensian preachers, which led to the Alpine churches’ support of the Reformation. However, when the Duchy of Savoy annexed the Upper Chisone Valley, Protestants were forced to flee to northern Europe. Eventually, the village became entirely Catholic.
That’s why the village’s church is Catholic, not Waldensian, despite the village’s origin. If you walk through the gently sloping village lanes, you’ll feel like stepping back in time. In the centre of the main street, there is a small rainwater channel that still runs. The street names are in patois, the local Piedmontese dialect.

Laux looks like a classic Alpine village, with steep-roofed stone houses and colourful flower beds everywhere. But what makes it truly special are the many hand-painted murals. They aren’t just on the walls, but even on domestic utility meters boxes, a feature it shares with neighbouring Usseaux.
The village is also known for its numerous fountains, which provide fresh, clean mountain water. These fountains are perfect for refilling bottles during your visit.

Walking and Hiking in and Around Laux
The natural surroundings of Laux offer many walks and scenic hikes. The main highlight is the Lake of Laux. Here, you can relax on a bench and soak in postcard-perfect views of the Alps.
An easy woodland trail begins at the edge of the village, suitable for families and beginners. I walked it with my son and we really enjoyed it together. Another marked trail leads to the Rocca del Laux and the local observatory. Both offer peaceful walks through unspoiled nature and breathtaking mountain views.
If you’re interested in history, you can also venture further into the hills to see the remains of an octagonal fortification, built by Louis XIV to block the Waldensian movement between the valleys. Nearby, you’ll also find the remnants of a military observatory and barracks in the Vallone del Laux.
Don’t miss a trip to the nearby village of Usseaux, famous for its murals, or a visit to the impressive Fort of Fenestrelle, which can be reached by car or on foot if you enjoy a challenging hike.

Where to Eat in Laux
The only restaurant in the area is the Ristorante Lago del Laux, located directly opposite the small lake. The same management runs the hotel with the same name, the camping and the mini-golf course nearby.
The menu features a good selection of mountain cuisine. Prices are a bit high, with first courses starting at €13 plus a €2.50 fixed charge for “coperto”. However, as there are no other bars or eateries nearby, this is your best bet unless you bring a picnic.

Where to Stay in Laux: Hotel, Campsite, or Wild Camping With a Van
Depending on your travel plans, there are several options for overnight stays in Laux. The Hotel Lago del Laux has seven Alpine-style rooms and a few apartments for longer stays. Overlooking a peaceful natural lake, the hotel also serves traditional dishes from Occitan and Val Chisone cuisine.
If you’re travelling by campervan, from June to September, you can stay in the campsite next to the hotel. Rates start from €15 per night. Nevertheless, when I visited Laux with my campervan, I chose wild camping instead. Note that this is only possible when the official camper area is closed. There’s a suitable lay-by near the lake, as the two parking spaces before the village are for cars only.

How to Get to Laux
To reach Laux from Turin, take the A55 motorway towards Pinerolo. Then follow the SS23 road towards the Sestriere Pass. After passing Fenestrelle, where you can stop for visiting its famous fortress, drive for another three kilometres. The first left turn signpostes for Laux.
The journey takes around 1.5 hours from Turin. The road is mostly wide and easy to navigate. There is just a short, narrow stretch leading up to the village. Along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular Alpine scenery.
Reaching Laux by public transport is trickier, as buses from Turin only go as far as Usseaux. From there, it’s about a 30-minute walk to the village.
