Museum of Islamic Art
The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is another architectural marvel located on the Corniche waterfront, near the National Museum of Qatar. You can visit both on the same day, as I did. Designed by the renowned architect Ieoh Ming Pei, best known in Europe for the Louvres Pyramid, the Museum of Islamic Art’s minimalist design is inspired by Islamic architecture, geometry, and calligraphy.
The MIA houses one of the world’s most extensive Islamic art collections. There are over 14,000 artefacts from the 7th to the 19th century. The museum’s galleries showcase a range of objects, including ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and manuscripts, from different regions of the Islamic world.
One of the highlights of the MIA is the stunning glass dome that covers the central atrium. This dome provides a dramatic backdrop to the museum’s exhibits. The museum also offers a range of educational programs which provide visitors with an in-depth understanding of Islamic art and culture.

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art
Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is Qatar’s only museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art from the Arab world and the Middle East. Located in the Education City complex, the museum offers Arab perspective on contemporary art.
Mathaf’s collection includes over 9,000 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and video art, from the 1840s to the present. The museum’s galleries showcase the work of prominent Arab artists as well as emerging artists from the region. Here, you can see art pieces created by Mahmoud Said, Saloua Raouda Choucair, and Mona Hatoum.
One of the highlights of Mathaf is the museum’s outdoor sculpture park. It features works by artists such as Adel Abdessemed, Ahmed Mater, and Wael Shawky.

Msheireb Museums is a cluster of four heritage houses restored to showcase Qatar’s traditional architecture, culture, and way of life. Here, you can learn from the history of Qatar’s first oil well, to the role of women in Qatari society, to the traditional crafts and trades of the country.
Mohammed Bin Jassim House, Company House, Radwani House, and Bin Jelmood House offer a glimpse into Qatar’s past through various artefacts, photographs, and multimedia exhibits. One of the highlights of the Msheireb Museums is the opportunity to explore the heritage houses meticulously restored to their former glory. The 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum (QOSM) showcases the history and evolution of sports in Qatar and worldwide, as well as the success stories of international athletes. As you wander through Souq Waqif, one of Doha’s most historic markets, be sure to keep an eye out for the impressive bronze thumb sculpture. Known as La Pouce, The Thumb in English, this striking artwork was created by renowned French artist César Baldaccini.

Tom Claassen’s impressive sculpture, The Falcon, is a magnificent depiction of Qatar’s majestic national bird. Lusail Marina hosts an exquisite sculpture crafted by the talented local artist Shouq Al Mana. The piece represents the egal, a traditional headdress worn by Qatari men. The piece is a stunning work of art that captures this traditional headwear’s essence and cultural significance. Its elegant design and intricate details make it a tribute to Qatari heritage.
The Miraculous Journey
In front of Sidra Medicine hospital, there’s a controversial installation by artist Damien Hirst called “The Miraculous Journey”. It depicts fetal development and consists of 14 bronze sculptures, with the largest being a 14-meter high full-term fetus. Some find it emotive and compelling, while others see it as unsettling. I find it powerful and beautiful, evoking strong emotions and encouraging contemplation.

The 7 stands in the Museum of Islamic Art Park (MIA Park) ant it is Doha’s tallest public art piece. Created by the renowned American artist Richard Serra, who also designed the East-West/West-East installation outside Doha, the 7 art piece is a fascinating tribute to the cultural significance of the number seven in Islamic traditions. It is a powerful symbol of the intersection between spirituality and science. Its towering presence in the park is a testament to this vibrant city’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.
Family Reunion
At the Msheireb Metro Station in Doha, you’ll find a mural created by the talented artist Abulaziz Yousef Ahmed. This beautiful work of art depicts the Qatari tradition of extended family gatherings, where people of all ages come together to celebrate and spend time with one another. The vibrant and colorful mural represents the generations of grandparents to grandchildren. It also adds a touch of warmth and community to the bustling metro station.

At the Qatar National Convention Centre, you can marvel at the impressive sculpture of a massive bronze spider created by the renowned artist Louise Bourgeois. The spider, depicted carrying a sack full of marble eggs, is a tribute to the concept of motherhood. This striking work of art is truly a sight to behold and a must-see for anyone visiting the convention centre.
East-West/West-East at Brouq Nature Reserve
If you are looking for a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience, you should visit the installation of US artist Richard Serra in Brouq Nature Reserve, Zekeet. The East-West/West-East installation features four towering steel monoliths that appear to rise from the barren, martian landscape, creating a haunting and otherworldly atmosphere.
The reserve is also dotted with natural rock formations that add to its surreal beauty. While the drive from Doha takes about 1.5 hours, the stunning views at sunset make it well worth the trip.
