Souq Waqif is the main tourist attraction in Doha, and it’s a bustling marketplace that’s definitely worth a visit. In its alleys, you can find treasures from all over the Middle East, such as dates, spices, perfumes, jewellery, clothing, handicrafts, and, of course, souvenirs. There are also a variety of restaurants offering the best of Qatari cuisine. If you want to learn more, this article will help you discover what Souq Waqif has to offer to both tourists and locals.

Uncovering the Heritage of Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif was vibrant marketplace for Bedouin nomads, who used to trade goods, particularly livestock products, for centuries. In the 1990s, the souq experienced a decline, followed by a fire in 2003.

PLAN YOUR TRIP TO QATAR
During your trip to Qatar make sure you stay connected by purchasing Airalo eSIM online in advance, and avoid the hassle of buying a physical SIM at the airport.
In addition, remember to purchase Heymondo travel insurance that provides coverage against unexpected events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and more. It offers great value for money and ensures a stress-free and enjoyable trip!

To safeguard Souq Waqif historical importance, in 2006 the government launched a comprehensive restoration project, focused on preserving the traditional Qatari buildings. For this reason only buildings built before the 1950s were renovated and newer structures were removed. The renovation was completed in 2008 restoring traditional cooling methods.

Traditional architecture of Arab markets

The original buildings of Souq Waqif date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The structures showcase the traditional Qatari architectural style. Its main features are the intricate geometric patterns and ornate detailing, reflecting the Qatari people’s cultural identity.

The traditional Arab markets have a structure consisting of many alleys with two facing rows of shops. Originally, Souq Waqif had rows of wooden pillars covered with fabric or burlap. Over time, more durable materials like stone and clay were used.

Today, Souq Waqif is a great destination for both locals and tourists. Wandering through the alleys and passages of Souq Waqif, you can see firsthand its architectural legacy.

The Golden Thumb: contemporary art installation at Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif, however, is not only classic Arab architecture. It also hosts the contemporary sculpture Golden Thumb. This unique art installation has become a prominent landmark in the souq. This huge golden thumb, created by the renowned French artist César Baldaccini, is a popular spot for photo opportunities.

Shopping and souvenirs at Souq Waqif

At Souq Waqif, you can buy traditional scarves, embroidered cloaks, tailor-made robes, birds, pets, and kitchen hardware like pots and pans. The market offers a lot of goods, including some items you might not have known existed.

If you’re a food enthusiast, the food section of the souq is a must-visit. You’ll find many colourful spices, nuts, and tea leaves, as well as saffron, sweets, honey, dried fruits, and preserved lemons.

Take your time exploring the different flavours and speaking to the vendors. They’ll be happy to guide you through the options. I recommend buying aromatic spices or dry fruits, which are the perfect gifts for your family.

Haggling is encouraged and part of the experience, but remember to have cash on hand as some shopkeepers may not accept cards. However, at least two ATMs are in the market, so you can quickly withdraw money if needed, as I did during my shopping session at Souq Waqif.

Dining and food experiences at Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif is not only a vibrant marketplace. It also houses a great variety of traditional-style restaurants and casual cafés where to taste local and regional flavours. Additionally, you can find shisha lounges, charming antique stores, art galleries, and luxurious boutique hotels there.

Souq Waqif is the perfect place to taste food from across the Middle East on one of the many available roof terraces. To avoid long wait times, I recommend arriving early or booking your table in advance. In fact, especially during the weekend, the most popular restaurants are always full.

Street Food

If you prefer to try some traditional street food, I suggest the traditional Karak Tea. It’s a popular variation of the street drink Masala Chai, which is very popular in the Gulf area.

Different shops use slightly different spices mix to prepare the Karak Tea. However, Karak Tea is a delicious drink made with black tea, different spice mixes, and evaporated milk.

During my stay in Doha, I also tasted some of the delicious street food at night in the square in front of the entrance of Souq Waqif. In particular, I recommend trying the Arabic crepe, a popular street food made fresh by the vendors just in front of the souq entrance.

Arabic crepe is made with flour mixed with water, then poured over a circular frying pan and spread evenly with a spatula. After about one minute, the Arabic crepe is ready.

The vendor explained to me that you can eat the Arabic crepes plain, with cottage cheese, or cottage cheese plus eggs. Some stalls add Nutella to the plain crepe to make it sweet.

Nearby attractions and landmarks

In the vicinity of Souq Waqif, you can visit the stables that house camels and Arabian horses. In addition, there are two other souqs to explore: the Gold Souq, renowned for gold jewellery and ornaments, and the Falcon Souq, where you can discover the tradition of falconry.

Gold Souq

Just off the main area of Souq Waqif, you’ll find the Gold Souq, a separate building housing over 40 shops specialising in high-end 18 and 22-carat jewellery. This souq is dedicated to gold and offers traditional and contemporary jewellery at competitive prices.

While some jewellery may be too flashy for Western tastes, you can find more simple necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Most shopkeepers are happy to create custom items based on your own design or personalise a pendant with your name spelt out in Arabic calligraphy.

Falcon Souq

Located at the edge of Souq Waqif, the Falcon Souq is dedicated to the falcons. These animals hold deep reverence and respect among Qataris. Falconry, in fact, is a sport with roots in Qatar’s history and it is still widely practised today. You can learn more about falconry at the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum.

Falcons are typically sold and bought for thousands of dollars at public auctions. Inside the arcaded building’s showroom, falcons stand still on wooden perches, with their heads encased in hoods.

In any falconry shop, you can have your picture taken with a falcon perched on your arm, under the supervision of the shopkeeper, for just a couple of dollars. Falcons are not armed or bothered by visitors.

Falcon Hospital

In my opinion, visiting the nearby Falcon Hospital would be more interesting than taking a picture with a falcon in a shop. Owners bring their falcons to the Falcon Hospital for treatment, like you can take a family member to the hospital if needed.

Entry at the Falcon Hospital is free, and there is a small exhibition to see. If a veterinarian is available, you can also visit the falcon operating theatre. Unfortunately, there were no veterinarians on duty during my visit, but I hope to be more fortunate next time I’m in Doha.

Horse Stables

Just a short walk from the Falcon Souq, you’ll find the Horse Stables, which house Arabian horses and camels. You can take photos of the animals in their open pen during the winter or on cooler days when they can run outside.

Despite the name, the main animals you’ll see there are camels. There is no entrance fee, so feel free to wander around and enjoy the experience.

How to reach Souq Waqif

The Souq Waqif is situated in the center of Doha, facing the Doha Corniche. The coastline near Souq Waqif was significantly changed in the late 1950s and early 1960s due to land reclamation for the Doha Corniche, resulting in a shift of approximately 335 meters northward.

It’s a popular tourist spot so you will probably pass through it several times during your stay in Doha. Some landmarks around Souq Waqif that can be used for orientation are Souq Waqif Park, which separates the souq from the Corniche, and the imposing Abdullah Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center building.

You can access Souq Waqif by car, taxi, or bus. and is conveniently located near the Doha Metro, with the closest station being the Souq Waqif station on the Gold Line. Parking may be limited, so it’s better to use public transportation or a taxi.

Practical tips for visiting Souq Waqif

Compared to other more touristy Middle Eastern souqs, Souq Waqif is a good surprise thanks to its non-aggressive vendors, which creates a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. This makes it a pleasant souq to visit, allowing you to explore and take in the unique sights and sounds without feeling pressured.

You can reach the Souq Waqif by public transport and wander through its small alleys for shopping. However, if you want to delve deeper into Arabic architecture, history and culture, you can opt to take a guided tour of the souq.

During the hottest hours of the day in summer, Souq Waqif is usually closed. I suggest planning your visit during the cooler parts of the day.

Souq Waqif is most lively in the late afternoon until late at night, with bustling activity and a vibrant atmosphere. In the evening, you’ll also find a variety of restaurants and food vendors offering delicious local cuisine, giving you the opportunity to enjoy authentic flavors.

Doha boasts a wide range of beautiful hotels with swimming pools and fitness centers to choose from. DoubleTree by Hilton Doha Old Town is a great modern accommodation in the heart of Doha. For a sea view option, you can choose the Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach. If you prefer to stay in a hotel with an Arabian touch, I can recommend La Maison Hotel Doha, or for a luxurious experience, the incredible Sharq Village & Spa, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
